Fly-Fishing

The rivers surrounding the Crowsnest Pass contain Rainbow, Cutthroat and Brown Trout as well as Brook Trout and Dolly Varden.
Wet and dry flies as well as nymphs are productive. Rods ranging from 4 through 7 weight work well in most situations with 5 & 6 weights being the most common and useful. Do not worry if your equipment is not the newest or finest, remember you have only to impress the fish. During the hot summer months you will see fishers wearing anything from neoprene waders to shorts depending on how they acclimatize to the water temperatures and a variety of footwear to wade during the day. On most of our streams you’ll find a felt sole provides more grip than rubber although many people find rubber soled boots work well.
There are a couple of excellent fly shops in the community where one can pick up incidentals such as tippets and flies as well as complete outfits.
For clothing a layered approach to clothing works well to adapt to the variation. A hat and sunglasses help to provide protection from the glare off the water and Polaroid lenses enable you to better spot the fish.
